About the day ?
It is essential to realize that our Wine Country Abseiling Tour is a full-day experience where we take care of everything throughout the day.
Designed for people that want more from the day than wine drinking.
After picking you up from your accommodation, we will make our way out to the cliffs in the Watagans National Park. On arrival at the cliffs, we will spend some time training in preparation for that first abseil. After lunch which we provide, we will travel back to the vineyards for a tour of the wineries you have selected. Finally, we will drop you back at your accommodation.
Key points, Wine Country Abseiling Tour:
Extra information, Wine Country Abseiling Tour
On offer for people that want more out of their weekend in the Hunter Valley is the chance to Abseil down one of three unique cliffs. Choose between Twenty meters, Sixty Meters or the very challenging Dark Cave. Additionally, the tour provides you with the opportunity to enjoy the included cooked lunch, looking out over some spectacular views of the Hunter Valley.
We will spend the first half of our day in a very secluded part of the Watagans National park, both abseiling and enjoying the Australian bush.
Returning from the National Park will see us visiting three wineries allowing you to partake in what the valley is famous for, wine tasting and drinking. Should you decide that you want to stay at the first winery and visit a chocolate or cheese factory instead, it is not a problem. We realise it is your day, and we welcome your input into the itinerary.
Valuable Information
Significantly, you will receive comprehensive training; for this reason, previous abseiling experience is not necessary.
Being moderately fit is all that is required. To explain, hiking the path back to the top of the cliff can be challenging for some people.
Another key point, we have had children as young as ten and adults as old as seventy-two complete all three cliffs.
Your personal Wine Country Abseiling Tour departs from your vineyard accommodation at 8 am and returns you at approx. 5.00 pm.
All our abseiling adventures are challenge by choice.
What Will I Be Doing:
First and foremost, we hope you enjoy the ride through the National Park in our Air Conditioned 4 X 4 Troop Carrier, which is a fantastic way to begin your adventure day. Then, when you arrive at the cliffs, you will start your training for your first abseil. Then, once you’re comfortable and ready, we’ll begin abseiling the three drops detailed on our itinerary page.
Last but not least, you’ll have morning tea and lunch while looking out at the fantastic views.

Training
After some training and preparation on sloping ground, you will be ready to tackle your first abseil of the day. When designing the Wine Country Abseiling Tour, we decided it would be best for people to choose which cliff they wanted to experience. The technique is always the same; it’s just the height that varies. The most popular cliff is the Mega drop.
Mega Drop
After a enjoying a short morning tea break it’s time to tackle the Mega drop, 60 meters of adrenaline-pumping action. The memories of achieving a challenge like the mega wall are both life-changing and lifelong. The opportunity to explore some caves and study the intricate formations wind has carved into the rock will present itself.
Visit 3 Wineries
By selecting wineries that are close together, you will have plenty of time to visit three different ones and enjoy the wine tasting. Before the day, someone from Walking Rivers will liaise with the selected wineries and arrange your tasting. Our guides have been working in the Hunter Valley for many years and can help you decide on the best vineyards to visit.
Our abseiling activities are always done in the Watagan’s National Park, which is approx. a 40 minute drive south of the vineyards.
