A Silver Qualifying Journey is a memorable experience and a major achievement.
Written by one of the 16 year old female participants, who wished to remain anonymous. It is a requirement they record their thoughts and reflections of the trip.
This Silver Qualifying journey was one of the most physically and mentally demanding experiences I’ve ever done. One of the first things I realised during the hike was how unprepared I was for the level of physical endurance required. Compared to the Bronze AJ, the Silver hike was a major step up in both distance and difficulty.
The steep inclines, long days of hiking, and constant exposure to cold winds and rain were a serious challenge. I quickly learned that fitness and preparation play a huge role in the experience, and I found myself pushing through exhaustion at times. However, despite these difficulties, the experience was incredibly rewarding.

The group I was with made a huge difference to how I experienced the trip. Their constant support and encouragement helped lift morale, especially during the hardest moments. There was always someone ready with a kind word, a joke, or just quiet support when things got tough. Even when we were soaked, cold, and tired, the sense of camaraderie kept spirits high
The evenings, especially the nights spent gathered around the campfire playing cards and sharing stories, were definite highlights.

One night, after our tents were soaked, we all ended up sleeping in a bathroom. It was completely unexpected, but it turned into a great bonding moment and a memory we’ll all carry with us.
If I were to do this again, I would definitely pack more thoughtfully, only what I truly need, with an emphasis on waterproof gear and lighter, high-energy food. Overall, despite the challenges, the experience was unforgettable. It tested my limits but also gave me a huge sense of accomplishment. The organisation of the trip was solid, and I appreciated the support from instructors and leaders. In the end, it wasn’t just a hike,it was a lesson in resilience, teamwork, and finding joy in unexpected moments.
The group dynamic was excellent. Everyone shared the load fairly, from tents to cooking equipment, and there were no major disagreements throughout the trip. This teamwork was vital, especially in tough conditions, and helped keep everything running smoothly. It was also a great learning experience in terms of what to bring and how to pack. I brought too many spare clothes, which weighed my pack down and made packing and unpacking frustrating. I also didn’t choose food very well, some items became unappetising in the cold and rain, and I found myself wishing I had packed lighter, simpler snacks that were easier to eat on the goThe most memorable moments of the hike included the surprise sighting of black cockatoos near the end of the trek, a rare experience, especially after being told they were endangered due to habitat loss. It felt like a rewarding sign at the end of a difficult journey. My proudest achievement was pushing through the extreme weather, freezing rain, harsh winds, and soaked gear, and still completing the hike with the group. If I were to do this again, I would definitely pack more thoughtfully, only what I truly need, with an emphasis on waterproof gear and lighter, high-energy food. Comments from the hike Leader
The above winter Silver Qualifying Journey began with seven girls and one boy taking part. During the second day an east coast low formed off the coast of NSW, and the weather turned nasty. We were hiking close to the coast in the Brisbane Waters National Park. Two of the girls asked their parents to come pick them up after the second night because they were concerned about the weather. I was really proud of the six hikers who persevered under awful conditions to complete the journey.
