SILVER RAFTING AWARD JOURNEY, ITINERARY
Day 1: Driving to the Nymboida River, Silver Rafting Award Journey
Generally speaking, we must remain flexible when conducting any Nymboida River Expeditions. Significantly, we often have Duke of Edinburgh participants flying in, and we may pick you up from an airport. Alternatively, you may be travelling with us in our vehicle, leaving Newcastle after catching the train from Sydney.
That is to say, we adjust our meeting and pickup times to ensure we arrive at the first campsite beside the Nymboida River before dark.
Day 2: Start Training and Practice – Introductions & river basics
After breakfast, experience a warm welcome from enthusiastic instructors, who will guide you through your Silver Rafting Award Journey preparations.
Readying the rafts by pumping them up and loading your gear is all part of the preparations.
Furthermore, you will receive a comprehensive safety briefing before donning a life jacket and helmet.
Kick off your expedition with essential paddling practice on calmer waters, setting a solid foundation for the coming days.
Another key point, an exciting activity today, will be portaging your raft and gear around the end of the old power station weir.
Without delay, as evening falls, set up camp along the riverbank and wind down with a campfire dinner. Gather around the fire for fun team-building activities and enriching discussions about the day’s adventures.
Day 3: Complete Training and Practice – Skills in Action
After a hearty breakfast, prepare for an exciting day on the river. Learn the basics as you go through class II and III rapids, focusing on working together and talking to each other.
Equally important, have a lovely lunch by the river, where you can tell stories and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
In the afternoon, take on more difficult parts of the river and learn important skills like how to move and read the flow of the water. You will spend the night in a beautiful area where you will set up tents and cook food together as a team.
To end the day, think about the things you’ve done and the problems you’ve faced. Inward reflection will help you feel more connected to your friends and nature.
Day 4: Qualifying Journey begins – You decide everything
Throughout your Qualifying journey, you and your raft partner will decide the best course to steer down the rapids. Your guides will take a backseat to decision-making, letting each raft team make their own.
You will still have contact via two-way radios for safety, but their use is not encouraged.
As a team, you will both learn to enhance your rafting skills by applying all of your knowledge and experience gained during the Training and Practice Journey.
You and your friends will decide when and where to have lunch stops and rest breaks.
Not to mention the other important task of navigation, it’s a good idea to know where you are on the river at all times.
In due time, as the sun sets, set up camp in a gorgeous place. Over dinner, reflect on your experience and share your feelings about the journey.
Day 5: Qualifying Journey – Day 2, Challenging Challenges
Prepare yourself for the most thrilling section of the river, navigating grade III rapids that will test your teamwork and communication abilities.
Today also includes a couple of mandatory portages, Bridal Veil Falls and New Zealand Falls.
These 180-metre falls are grade IV and strewn with boulders and pour-overs. We get down them by dragging the rafts over the rocks and floating them when possible.
Complete a longer stretch of the river in the afternoon, applying everything you’ve learned and celebrating your progress.
Settle in at another scenic campsite for the night, where you can share sit around a campfire and swap stories of how you survived the day.
