ABOUT THE NYMBOIDA RIVER

The Nymboida river starts its 165 kilometers run to the sea from way up on the Dorrigo Plateau.

Nature has positioned the plateau to capture the high summer rainfalls that this part of NSW enjoys. The result is a pristine river that provides a safe environmental bastion for endangered aquatic species like the Platypus and the Eastern Freshwater Cod.

Over its entire journey, the river water drops a remarkable one thousand two hundred meters and is joined by nine significant tributaries before combining at its confluence with the Mann River.

Our Nymboida River exploration trip makes for the perfect relaxing five-day getaway. Additionally, it also provides plenty of time for you to become fully immersed in all the natural beauty the river has to offer.

A GREAT PLACE FOR LEARNING

Our start location up above the weir is a great section for people that are new to kayaking. Whether you want to learn paddling skills on flat water or experience a taste of paddling whitewater, this section of the river has ample opportunity you to practice both skills.

As the water moves downstream, it becomes interspersed with pools and some grade one rapids making it ideal for learning.

ACTIVITY HIGHLIGHTS

Initially, you will possibly meet every rapid on the Nymboida River Kayak Adventure with trepidation, and then after each rapids completion, you will celebrate the joy of a successful passage down its bubbling waters.

Sometimes you may not be successful, rolling out of your kayak means having to swim to the pool at the bottom of the rapid, but this is all part of the fun and exhilaration that comes with paddling whitewater.

Swimming down the rapids is also on our agenda when the opportunity presents itself. An activity that is a real adrenaline rush and refreshing at the same time.

Additionally, sitting around the campfire at night sharing stories from the days paddling while slow roasting marshmallows and then curling up in your tent will leave you feeling like you are in another world.

Key points, activity highlights

  • Portages that are great fun
  • A challenging, rewarding environment
  • See weird rock pools
  • Adrenalin rush on rapids
  • Swimming in cool fresh water

We are limited to what we can travel with, as both all our camping equipment and food needs to fit into the Kayaks. However, we feel the boats are roomy enough for us to take everything we need to ensure a high level of comfort.

We are camping in a different location beside the river each night. Therefore we need to set up and dismantle our camp every day.

Key points, about our camping

  • Camp right beside the river
  • Reconnect with nature
  • Relaxing environments
  • Go to sleep hearing natural sounds
  • Plenty of free time for reflection

ABOUT THE KAYAKS

Custom designed kayaks for undertaking river journeys like the Nymboida River Kayak Adventure. They are light, stable, easy to paddle, respond well to turning maneuvers and are excellent for learning to paddle whitewater.

Longer than a short whitewater boat but not as long as a sea kayak they are a compromise between the two, primarily because as well as needing to be highly maneuverable in the rapids they need to also be right on the flat water sections of the river.

  • Unique river touring design
  • Inbuilt permanent floatation
  • Responsive and easy to paddle
  • Fast through the water
  • Can carry large amounts of gear

Our adventure begins the moment we board the mini bus heading for the Nymboida River kayaking Adventure .Relax ,sit back and enjoy the journey.

PRE TRIP MEETING

WHEN

Approximately one week before leaving

HOW

We endeavor to telephone or skype every person who has booked the Nymboida River Kayak Adventure with us.

After the introductions, your guide will tell you about the logistics of the journey and any other relevant details.

The call also gives us a chance to answer any questions or concerns you may have about your adventure.
Additionally, we will confirm the exact departure time and location, for each person or to alert you if there are have been any last minute changes.

DEPARTURE DAY

You will be a member of a team partaking in an adventure experience from the moment we meet at our bus departure point.

Our guides will assist you to pack your gear on board the bus, introduce you to anyone you haven’t met and work to ensure you are relaxed and comfortable about the adventure ahead.

This first day is spent travelling to our first campsite At Cartmill Park nature reserve beside the Nymboida River.

To be there with enough time to set up camp, cook dinner, unload the boats, etc. we need to have a seven am start in Newcastle. I know early isn’t it.

For people that do not wish to travel so far by road, it is possible to fly to Coffs Harbour, and the bus can pick you up from the airport. Flights are at your cost.

On arrival at Cartmill Park, we put up tents, light a fire ( if fire restrictions are not in force) have dinner and enjoy t8he evening talking around the campfire.

The bus also leaves us and heads to Jackadagery where our paddling journey ends.

SECOND DAY

Rise and shine ready for fun and adventure. Firstly we have a hearty breakfast after that’s complete we pack everything up and load it into the kayaks.

The river at this point is full and relatively calm, it makes it an excellent place for people to learn or brush up on their paddling skills on our way to the next campsite 28 kilometres away.

We will be covering the following paddle strokes and whitewater skills; these are all the skills needed for you to enjoy the Nymboida River Kayak Adventure comfortably.

Its a great chance for some revision for the more experienced paddlers and for the new kayakers they will quickly see how easy kayaking is.

We will be covering the following paddle strokes and whitewater skills;

  • Forward and reverse strokes
  • Sweep strokes
  • Draw strokes
  • Bow-rudder
  • Slap support recovery stroke
  • Ferry-glide. upstream and down-stream
  • How to read white-water to find the correct path down rapids.
  • Eddy out
  • Self rescue techniques
  • Equipment demonstration.
  • Group management
  • Safety Procedures.

Don’t worry if that seems a lot to remember; we have plenty of time to practice and go over all the different techniques once we are on the water and paddling back to camp.

The river starts off with a nice long flat tranquil pool;

Great for enabling people to get their balance and to get used to how the kayaks move in the water.

THIRD DAY

Every morning after breakfast we all gather together for an outline of the day’s plans. Followed up by some yoga for those that need limbering up before paddling.

Ha Ha just joking about the Yoga.

On our way, we’ll take plenty of breaks for stretching, photography, snacks, and we always take lots of time to explore the fascinating features the river has to offer.

The rapids today are numerous and relatively easy, with no portages or anything above grade two.

The difficult rapids arrive on our third day with three compulsory portages.

Don’t worry we portage around the nasty stuff, never putting anyone in harm’s way.

FOURTH DAY

Today has the least distance to paddle but it is also the most difficult day.

It has three compulsory portages in it, that require us to manhandle, carry, drag and float, anyway we can the Kayaks around the rapids.

Personally I find the portages to be a very exciting part of the journey. Providing a chance to get out stretch the legs and view the river from a totally different angle, they are just part of the whole awesome experience.

DAY FIVE

Once again after a good breakfast, we pack camp and load the kayaks for the last time.

As we get going, firstly, we need to portage around the infamous New Zealand Falls on river right.

Then secondly we paddle the last eight kilometres down to the Jackadagery Bridge were we exit the river for the last time.

We arrive at the bridge with plenty of time to board the bus and get back to Newcastle.

IMPORTANT:

Our approximate return time to Newcastle is between 5 -7 pm, however, due to the number of variables in wilderness travel we recommend that you don’t plan any critical appointments that rely on us being back at this time. Fixed times and dates can cause unnecessarily stressful complications should our return be delayed by something out of our control. Please feel free to contact us if you would like to discuss your travel plans in more detail. We can pick you up or drop you off at the Airport or your house.
